Genetic counselors are healthcare professionals with a Master's degree in medical genetics and training in psychosocial counseling. One of their roles is to keep up-to-date on the latest genetic information and testing laboratories. The formal definition of genetic counseling is "the process of providing information and support to families who have questions regarding birth defects, genetic conditions, or chronic health concerns, e.g., cancer, in themselves, a pregnancy, their children, or their extended family." When To Call Individuals or families are often referred to genetic counseling by a family physician or specialist for the following reasons:
What to Expect Genetic counselors often meet with women who are 35 years of age or older at the time of delivery or have an abnormal triple marker screening and are thus at increased risk of having a baby with a chromosome disorder or birth defect. When the diagnosis of a disorder or syndrome is complicated or uncertain, a patient may be referred to the Bloomington Hospital Genetics Outreach Clinic; which is staffed by an IU Medical Center physician-geneticist four times a year. Genetic consultations often involve multiple appointments. Preparation usually occurs days before the actual appointment and includes collection of a family history, drawing of a pedigree, gathering of pertinent medical records, and research into the latest literature pertaining to the patient's history. The consultation consists of communication of the implications of the diagnosis and/or the risks of a genetic disorder. This includes an explanation of the genetic etiology and inheritance pattern. If testing is indicated, this option is discussed. The genetic counselor provides emotional and educational support and often helps patients network with other individuals or families who have the same disorder. Patients who need genetic counseling will be referred to either the Indiana University Medical Center or St. Vincent's Hospital of Indianapolis. [Click here to return to the top]
